The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Thursday adopted a law establishing the administrative responsibility of producers that give incorrect information about the contents of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in products.
A total 352 MPs out of 432 MPs registered in the hall voted for the amendments to the laws of Ukraine on the obligatory labeling of products containing GMOs.
According to the law, the label of any product must contain information on the presence or absence of GMOs in food.
The law set the requirements for producers (sellers) to change incorrect information about goods if these goods don't harm the health, life or property of consumers.
If incorrect information about products is given, the producer or seller removes them from sale and corrects the information in line with the law.
Moreover, giving improper information about products by producers leads to a fine set at 10-50 non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens, if this information doesn't damage the life, health and property of consumers
If the persons responsible for giving incorrect information about all products do not correct it, or again give incorrect information within a year of the moment of penalty, they will be fined 50-200 non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens.
The law will come into force two months after its publication, once the president signs the law.
