Embattled OUPSD MP sues presidential aide over poisoning case

A former ally of Viktor Yushchenko and now presidential critic, MP Davyd Zhvaniya, from the propresidential Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defence faction, has filed a lawsuit with the Kyiv Pechersk district court against a deputy head of the presidential secretariat, Ihor Pukshyn. The suit is over the statement in which the latter said that Zhvaniya had been involved in the poisoning of President Viktor Yushchenko during the 2004 presidential campaign, the Kommersant-Ukraina newspaper reported today.

OUPSD faction agrees candidate for parliamentary speaker

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has said he believes that the candidacy of Ivan Plyushch for the post of parliamentary speaker should win unanimous support in Parliament, presidential press secretary Iryna Vannykova said at a briefing held today. "Our candidate should get monolithic support," she conveyed the words that the president said at a meeting with the propresidential Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defence parliamentary faction.

President's chief of staff says early election not priority, urges Parliament to elect new speaker

The head of the Ukrainian presidential secretariat, Viktor Baloha, has said that an early parliamentary election is not a priority at the present time. He was speaking in a pre-recorded interview broadcast by the ICTV TV channel on November 30. "The president does not need an election when the priority on today’s agenda is such a big problem as the economic crisis," he said.

Leader of propresidential faction says it is unlikely to join new coalition

The leader of the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defence parliamentary faction, MP Vyacheslav Kyrylenko, has said his political force is ruling out the possibility of forming a new coalition in the current Parliament. "Today many want to take advantage of Our Ukraine in order to remain in power or to get it, without changing the destructive essence of postcolonial, provincial and populist policy," Kyrylenko said at a congress of the Our Ukraine People's Union party in Kyiv today. The congress is being held behind the closed doors.

President says overcoming economic crisis should be priority for Parliament

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has said that overcoming the economic crisis should be a priority for Parliament, the Ukrayinska Pravda website reported today. Yushchenko was addressing the congress of the Our Ukraine-People's Union party in Kyiv. "We can find factions in Parliament which will unite when adopting the 2009 state budget and anti-crisis measures. These are our objectives for the near future," the website quoted him as saying.

President elected head of Our Ukraine People's Union party

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has been elected head of the Our Ukraine People's Union party, it was reported on November 29. Yushchenko was elected head of Our Ukraine People's Union by a unanimous vote of the party's congress held in Kyiv today. Prior to this, Yushchenko was the honorary head of the party. The former head of Our Ukraine People's Union, MP Vyacheslav Kyrylenko, resigned from the post at the beginning of the congress, 5 Kanal TV said. Kyrylenko remains the leader of the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defence parliamentary faction.

Presidential secretariat rejects premier's demand to restore coalition

The head of the presidential secretariat, Viktor Baloha, has said that Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko had no grounds and no moral right to put forward any demands to President Viktor Yushchenko or to the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defence bloc regarding the restoration of the democratic majority in the Ukrainian Parliament.

2009-2010 Parliamentary and Executive Internship Program Opening Ceremony

Volodymyr Yalovyi, Deputy Secretary General of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and James Pettit, US Chargé d’Affaires in Ukraine, handed interns i.d cards to 86 Program participants of the 2009-2010 Parliamentary Internship Program.

It was the 15th year of the IP operation in Ukraine. Over nine months, students from various regions get internship with 28 parliamentary committees and departments, 6 ministries and the Secretariat of the President of Ukraine.
