An investigator from the Ukrainian Interior Ministry's main investigation department has summoned the first deputy head of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), Anatoliy Shapovalov, for interrogation, the ministry's department for media liaisons and international activity quoted Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko as saying on Thursday.
"In principle, I realize that the NBU and the Ukrainian hryvnia need calm. This is a very important condition for ensuring the stability of the national currency. But this calm is currently being used by financial fraudsters who are appropriating commercial banks and currency resources worth hundreds of millions of hryvnias… The documents that are currently available to us and the reports we've recently received indicate that National Bank officials could be prosecuted," he said.
Lutsenko said that he had already informed Ukraine's leadership about abuses of this kind.
Lutsenko expressed hope that "such actions by the law enforcement agency will favor the further stabilization of the hryvnia exchange rate."
According to the Interior Ministry, the ministry is seeking to receive information on "who is responsible for the absence of control over a colossal financial fraud, in which hundreds of millions are plundered in broad daylight."
"Who will answer whether there has been any positive effect from the injection of UAH 83 billion into the banking system and why neither the public nor the economy can feel any [such positive effects]," Lutsenko said.
Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko earlier called for the dismissal of Anatoliy Shapovalov as first deputy head of the NBU.
