The Nikolaev Region is situated in the South of Ukraine, in the basin of undercurrent of the Yuzhny Bug river.
The territory is 24 600 km2, (4,1% of the total territory of Ukraine).
Population – 1 221 700 per. (2,6% of the total population of Ukraine)
Density of population is 51 persons per 1 km2.
There are 9 towns; the town population constitutes 66%.
There are 19 districts.
There are 287 village counsels.

Population of cities and towns of regional subordination:
Nikolaev - 512,4 thousand people
Pervomaysk - 81,9 thousand people
Voznesensk - 43,3 thousand people
Yuzhnoukrainsk - 42,15 thousand people
Ochakov - 18,1 thousand people

The most part of the Nikolaev region is situated on the Prichernomorskaya lowland, and only in the North, within the scope of the Pridneprovskaya eminence.
The soils: in the North ordinary chernozem prevails, in the South – chestnut chernozem prevails.
The climate is moderately continental with mild winter with little snow and hot dry summer.
The main water-way of the region is Yuzhny Bug which takes the third place among the Ukrainian rivers in his size.
The Nikolaev region disposes of great stocks of construction materials: more than 627 million m3 of building stone; 51,3 million m3 of granites with wide spectrum of colours and high decorative qualities. There are also industrial supplies of raw cement, raw clay and tile, mortar sand and etc.
The recreation potential of the Nikolaev region is highly appreciated: sea sand beaches extend to more than 70 km, the Yuzhny Bug banks have picturesque landscapes, mineral springs have operating supplies to 1,0 thousand m3 per day, geological stocks of curative mud in Tiligulsky and Beykushansky firths have more than 2 million m3 .
