Lviv Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life

In the north –eastern part of Lviv,in the picturesque Shevchenko Grove , covering 59 hectars , found its location an interesting museum , the Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life . The exposition of the Museum was inaugurated for visitors in 1972 .

Lviv History

According to the ancient chronicles Lviv was founded in 1256 by the Prince of Qalicia and Volyn Danylo Romanovych, who named the town in honour of his son Lev. The centre of old Lviv was on the site of today's Old Rynok Square. Situated on the crossroads of trade routes, Lviv grew fast, and soon became an important centre of commerce and crafts. Its location in the middle of Galicia-Volyn principality gave the town a considerable strategic value. In 1272 Prince Lev transferred the capital of the principality from Qalych to Lviv.

Lviv Ukrainian Children’s Theatre

Ukraine’s oldest theatre for children and youth founded in 1920 in Kharkiv, the former capital. Since 1944 the Theatre has been based in Lviv. Herasymchuk “Knyazhich Lev”, the historical fantasy about the foundation of Lviv; Brothers Grimm “Snowwhite and the seven Dwarfts”, T. Shevechenko “Nazar Stodolya” and Moliere’s “Tartuffe”.

The Lion's Castle

The hotel occupies two buildings that embrace both 19th and 20th centuries. Before World War II these buildings belonged to the representatives of Austrian-Hungarian and Polish elite and during Soviet era - to the Communist Party bosses. Besides, former President of Soviet Union Mr.M.Gorbachov stayed in one of the apartments of the hotel.

There are 14 rooms, including 4 double luxury and 1 super luxury rooms, restaurant, banquet-hall.

Dmytro Vitovsky

Dmytro Vitovsky became a national hero of the Ukrainian people. He used to be one of the leaders of Halician student youth and a fighter for the Ukrainian university in Lviv. He became a member of the Ukrainian Radical Party and an active organizer of a number of Ukrainian "Sich"groups, which later became part of the regular Halician Army. He was the colonel of the UHA himself. He started his active military career in 1914 participating in mountain battles in the Carpathians and was an ideologist of the Ukr.military political thought.

Jesuit CathedralJesuit Cahedral is an example of Lviv Baroque style and was erected at the time when the Jesuit Order was consolidating its position in the Western Ukraine.

At first, the Jesuits built a modest wooden church in Lviv in 1584 but in 1608 they opened a college attached to it and two years later began constructing the grandiose Church of St.Peter and St.Paul which was intended to enhance the Order's prestige.

Church of St. Olha and ElizabethChurch of St. Olha and ElizabethAfter the tragic death of Austrian empress a church was erected to recur to her memory, and named after St. Elizabeth. After the War the church was not functioning. It was returned to believers as a sanctuary of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church in independent Ukraine In the western part of the city this majestic building was erected in new Gothic style on the watershed of the Dniester and the Buh rivers. Armenian Church

1363-1908. Virmeska str., 7.

Armenian ChurchArmenian church is one of the most ancient churches in Lviv. In 2001 this sacral place was returned to the renewed Armenian Apostle church. The name of the church was also renewed and became the Virgin Mary's Dormition church. There is an Armenian cemetery with old grave monuments (XVI-XVII) and the wooden chapel “Calvary” (XVIII) in the yard of the church.

The armenian Diaspora in Ukraine has around 150.000 people. One of the most important places, where Armenians lived for a long time, is Lviv, or Lwow, as it was called in soviet time.

Church of the Blessed Eucharist In a former Dominican Roman-Catholic church a liturgy was recommenced in 1997. It became Ukrainian Greek-Catholic church of the Blessed Eucharist. This church appeared in the Will century in form of late baroque, at the on the ruins of ancient Gothic Roman-Catholic church. During a long time the sculpture of the Virgin Mary of Alabaster, which is in Krakow now, was a protector of the church. It is known in several copies now.

St. Anna's Church

XVI century. Address: 32, Horodotska.

St. Anna's ChurchSt. Anna's church has been known since the XVI century. At that time it was the sacred place of tailors' workshop. In the XVIII century the pilgrims were coming here with prayers to the Wonder-working Icon of Our Lady. After the last war the church was closed and returned to believers only in the early 1990s.

St. Nicholas Church

St. Nicholas' church is one of the oldest functioning Orthodox churches in Lviv. It has been known since the XIII century. The Wonder-working Icon of Saint Nicholas is preserved in the church. In the XVI century the Antiokhia's Patriarch loakim blessed this church by the part of saint's relics.
