Pharmaceutical companies that unjustifiably increase prices of medicines, may be punished by imposing of a fine equal up to 10 percent of their annual earnings, the acting chairman of the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine, Oleksandr Melnychenko, said in an interview published in the Dzerkalo Tyzhnia (The Mirror of the Week) weekly.

He said that at present, seven large pharmaceutical companies are suspected of unjustly raising their prices.

The committee has been investigating skyrocketing medicine prices since October 2008.

"[The suspected companies] are BaDM Ltd., Optima-Pharm Ltd., VVS Ltd., CJSC Alba Ukraine, Venta Ltd., Biokon Pharmacy Ltd. and Interpharm Ltd. We see signs of violation of law in their actions," he added.

Ukraine imports almost all medicaments. Due to the weakening of the Hryvnia, is this astonishing?

If state fixes too much prices, what are the alternatives?

-Black Market
-No imports (resp. reduced imports)
