Veryovka Choir in concert, Ukraine Palace (103 Chervonoarmiyska) 2 November at 19.00
Grygoriy Veryovka did a remarkable thing. In 1943, in the midst of World War II, he formed a choir that has existed the 60 plus years since, weathering good times and bad. The choir now has 140 members, including the performers in the allied dance troupe and orchestra. They perform pieces across genres and eras, from folk to Ukrainian classical music. At the Philharmonic for this concert, they’ll dip into their reservoir of Ukrainian folk music.

As part of the continuing international festival of photography KievFotoCom, the gallery Soviart is presenting an exhibition of Lithuanian photographer Vitas Luckus. Luckus works a lot with portraiture and socially-oriented photography. His calling has taken him across the territory of the former Soviet UNI0N, especially to the Asian portions, the Caucasus and the Siberian republics. The locations show up often in his photos. He also plays around with black-and-white techniques, which gives his work a faded, antique look; he makes collages as well.

Moloko Music Festival, Mystetsky Arsenal (28/30 Ivana Mazepy), 2 November at 17.00
This year the Moloko Music Festival, a joint project of the magazine Moloko and the record label Esthetic Music, will debut in Kyiv. For the opening show, the organisers have invited the popular Ukrainian alt-rock bands Esthetic Education and Krykhitka Tsakhes, which is nice. Another rising star in the post-Soviet space, Alina Orlova, has agreed to lend her indie chops to the show as well. Festival-goers will also hear Adam Beattie and the Consultants (UK), Johnny Bardo, Schastya CoMaha, Vasyl Vasyltsev, Prozori and Tainiy Gost.

Russian band Nochnie Snaipery (Night Snipers) started as an acoustic duet in 1993. For five years Diana Arbenina and Svetlana Surganova performed in nightclubs before going electric and getting really big. They’ve recorded 11 albums’ worth of quality pop and become one of the biggest bands in the former USSR. Surganova’s now gone solo, but the Snipers, who happen to be big lesbian icons, go on.

This Russian rock band’s name derives from the title of a Sasha Chorny poem, which in turn borrows from the English word ‘spleen’, which, apart from being an organ in the human body, also connotes depression. The band changed the middle letters to e-a in order to imitate the spelling of ‘Beatles’. In their 14 years of existence, the band has released as many albums and enjoyed many chart-climbing, if rather depressing, hits. The single Tell Her recently won an award for Best Video at the MTV Russian Music Awards.

Charismatic French DJs Spin at Xlib

Noze calls itself a band made up of two friends for the benefit of their other friends. Nice, no?
