Interview with
Richard Murray

GO2KIEV: Please explain why you have chosen to be an English Language Conversationalist?
I am a firm believer in the old adage: Never under estimate your talents! I feel that my prior professional experiences as well as my travels to a variety of European and USA cities have enabled me to become a messenger of communication skills. Of course, there are other fine people in the world who possess the innate ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with limited life experiences. But there are people, like me, who are gifted talkers and this gift can be turned into a highly advantageous and profitable profession in regards to “sales talent”.

GO2KIEV: What are your qualifications as a teacher of Business English?
Firstly, I am a native English speaker from the United Kingdom with a Bachelor Associates Degree in Business and Finance. My education was then followed with degree in Sociology in Great Britain. In 2003, I completed the training qualifications of TEFL (Teacher of a Foreign Language ) which is a course framework in the areas of teaching grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation as well as the teaching of speaking, listening, reading and writing. I believe in a teaching concept that emphasizes interaction as both the means and ultimate goal of learning a language.

GO2KIEV: Who are the business people you work within the Kiev community?
As a freelance entrepreneur, I understand that conducting and locating students is a variable combination of communication skills and good old fashion LUCK. I have worked with Ukrainian as well as international professionals in various embassies, businesses and colleges. Among my numerous clients are several prominent business people, diplomats and politicians. These business professionals have professed my dedication and service so I am pleased to say that my clientele has flourished and varied throughout my career.

GO2KIEV: How do you feel you are assisting your business professional clientele?
My students understand that speaking English is fundamental to integration and cohesion. They recognize the social and economic value of opportunities to learn English is an important step forward. Speaking English is fundamental to living together as well as entering the labor market. There are many Ukrainian business professionals who are eager to learn and accept a more westernized approach to communicating and conducting business. I hope I can be helpful in the broadening of a different viewpoint in relation of tolerance versus discrimination. An example would be the how to tactfully and skillfully teach the fine art of diplomacy in business, social and daily conversations. For example, a sentence could consist of the phrase, "We must agree to differ” which would be used in the context of contrasting viewpoints.

GO2KIEV: Why have you chosen Ukraine as a location to teach English?
Like many other expatriates in the community, I simply have developed a great understanding and love of the Ukrainian and Russian culture. In 1998, I moved to Russia due to a mix up in travel plans that for evermore changed my life. Originally, I had planned to establish a new life in China but at that time there was great difficulty obtaining a visa so my second option was to move to Russia. Immediately upon my arrival into Russia, I began work as an English teacher even though I had no prior experience with the Slavic language or culture. In three weeks timeit felt as though I was breaking down communication barriers and my students began a rapid progression with their knowledge and usage of the English language.

GO2KIEV: Have you always been an entrepreneur in your professional realm?
Yes, in my previous career I owned a small successful business that was connected to the music and clothing industry. I sold t-shirts and other music merchandise for rock groups that toured in Great Britain. I worked with representatives from the musical groups The Verve, U2, Supergrass and Simply Red. The merchandise requested and manufactured ranged from 100 – 5,000 items. As the company was small, I had to adapt a hand’s on approach to any tasks that arose no matter how big or small. It was an invaluable learning tool.

GO2KIEV: What are your favorite leisure interests?
I enjoy both modern and classical art, history and motor cars. Music has always played an important role in my life. I enjoy both modern and classical art, history and motor cars. Music has always played an important role in my life. And, most certainly, foreign travels as a tourist around Europe and the USA have allowed me to collect a treasure trove of friends and memories.
