Training of foreign students at the University started in 1961. Since then over 2000 citizens of Europe, Asia, Africa and America have got education here and been working successfully as doctors in many countries in the world. 330 foreign citizens got postgraduate training at the University and 70 its foreign graduates obtained the titles of professors.

In 2005-2006 academic year 463 foreign citizens are studying at the faculties of general medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or pass postgraduate training (general medicine faculty – 264, dentistry – 74, pharmacy faculty – 76, preparatory course – 15, faculty of distance learning – 3, postgraduate training – 31 citizens). Citizens from 41 countries of the world are studying here. The range of countries from which foreigners come to study at the University is very wide: Austria, Bangla Desh, Benin, Bulgaria, Ghana, Guinea, Greece, Denmark, Egypt, Israel, India, Iraq, Iran, Spain, Jordan, Cameroon, Canada, Kenya, Cyprus, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritius, Malaysia, Morocco, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Palestine, Peru, Poland, Russia, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, USA, Taiwan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Turkey, Sweden, the Federal Republic of Germany.

Factors that favor the growth of foreign students’ number are high academic standards of the University as well as the gradual improvement of every day life conditions and of the city infrastructure. The growth of the number of foreign students can be considered a sign of stability at the University, the high opinion in the world of the professional knowledge received here. Concerning the number of foreign students University holds the first place among higher educational establishment of Lviv.

Introduction in all faculties is conducted in Ukrainian, English or Russian. Since 1997 the teaching of foreign students in English has been provided. Nowadays more than 200 foreign students are studying at English Medium Program. Foreign citizens, who are not strong enough in Ukrainian can enter a one year of preparatory course, which includes an intense language program, as well as some basic training in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Graduate students of this course can be enrolled in the first year classes in Lviv National Medical University or any other School of Medicine in Ukraine.

To attract foreign students to the University Internet and e-mail are used. University graduates who now live and work abroad display high level of obtained professional knowledge and skills. That adds to the popularity of the University among foreign students. The advertising of the University through intermediary firms in Malaysia, India, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Iran, Pakistan, Poland, Bulgaria, the USA, etc. from which new students are expected, is carried out.

The international activity of the University is directed to further integration into European and world medical structures. It is intended to study and apply the leading experience in the field of higher medical education, to develop research, to promote University achievements in the world.

University has close contacts with different organizations in Poland, Malaysia, Jordan, India, Iran, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, Peru, Pakistan and other countries. The scientists of University support close relations with scientific and educational institutions of Germany, Hungary, USA, Canada, Australia, Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Poland, Belgium.
