Kyiv’s ‘Have Fun Safely’ Campaign A Big Success
During the international song contest Eurovision-2005, held in Kyiv May 14 through 22, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) carried out an informational campaign aimed at raising the young population’s awareness about HIV/AIDS.

Over 100.000 booklets with information about HIV/AIDS prevention were disseminated during the campaign. Those who received the booklets (primarily young people ages 16 to 29) were encouraged to participate in a special SMS contest by sending a text message from their cell phones to a number listed in the booklets. In reply they received an SMS with additional information about HIV/AIDS.

‘Such a combination of printed and electronic information to young people is very effective.  Research shows over 90% of all SMS messages are actually read to the end. This is a very high percentage compared to other ways of promotion’, said Oksana Skitalinska, UN advisor on cooperation with businesses, who helped organize the campaign.

Besides information on HIV/AIDS the booklets also contained condoms.

899 SMS messages were received during the course of the campaign. 50% of those who participated in the SMS contest were from 18 to 25 years old. 80% - ranged from 18 to 30.

Participants of the SMS contest also had a chance to win valuable gifts from organizers. Prizes were awarded during the Eurovision gala concert on Maidan Nezalezhnosti – Kyiv’s central square. Some prizes were awarded at the UN house in Ukraine.

The main prize -- an Avia tour to Prague for two from the Avionika Tour agency -- was awarded to Volodymyr Vaschuk, 22. Volodymyr is a 3-year geology student at Taras Schevchenko National University.

‘First I was attracted by a colorful booklet. When I opened it and saw a condom inside I thought, ‘what a good idea’, shared Vaschuk.  Vaschuk also said that information about AIDS should be presented in a positive way and people shouldn’t be afraid of it. ‘People should know everything about how not to get infected with HIV/AIDS and not be afraid. Once everyone learns these simple rules it will seem like brushing your teeth or taking a shower, i.e. like the basic rules of hygiene. Then, I believe, the spread of HIV/AIDS will be abated’.

Ten Fly S20 cell phones from Meredian Telecom and ten prize packages from Perfekt company were also awarded as part of the contest.
