Combino Plus lottery winners visit Vienna

04/22/2008

Many Kievans remember the new city tram Combino Plus exhibition organized by Siemens Ukraine and Kyivpastrans in December last year in Peremogy square. Visitors could take part in the competition for the best knowledge of the city tram’s history. The main prize – a trip to Vienna for two – was won by Elena Starostina, an accountant from a Kyiv company.

Elena and her husband decided to go to Vienna in the mid April – and were right! Vienna is one of the most beautiful and romantic cities of the Central Europe. Numerous parks with grass-plots and flower-beds  are favored by the city dwellers and tourists.

The winners were accompanied by Tatiana Verbitska, Head of the Kyiv city administration’s press-office. The main item of the agenda was visiting the Siemens trams producing plant. Stefan Langler, the plant’s representative acquainted the guests with the enterprise’s history and its products designed for various markets. He also presented the tram production process: starting from the base metal preprocessing – to the moment of the finished tram leaving the plant.
One can see the plant’s products everywhere in Vienna: in the U-Bahn and the city tram systems. The guests from Kyiv traveled by Combino tram in the central part of the city, encircled by the Ring – a ring of boulevards built in the second half of the 19th century at the place of the destroyed city walls.

Vienna is the tourists’ favored place. This is no surprise as the city’s architecture incorporates all the best known architectural styles: from Gothic’s and Renaissance to post-modernism. The guests admired the beautiful squares, impressive churches, splendid buildings in the famous Ringstrasse. They also saw the Opera House, the Houses of Parliament, the City Hall. During three days the small group of tourists managed to visit premises of Emperor Franz Joseph and his legendary wife Sissi, as well as the famous house of architect Hunderwasser and the Belvedere Palace. During the walk at the Prater Park our winners ventured to mount the Ferris wheel – the oldest Big Wheel in Europe that has become another symbol of Vienna together with the Stephansdom – to admire the bird’s-eye view of the city.

The finale of the trip was visiting the Vienna Albertina museum, the largest graphics’ collection in Europe.

We do hope that Elena and Igor will remember this trip for a long time.
