Swiss ambassador visits Zamglai communities, officially opens youth and health centres
On 18 April 2005, Ambassador of Switzerland to Ukraine Christian Faessler officially opened a health post and youth centre in the village of Zamglai village Ripkynskiy Raiyon, Chernihiv Oblast. The opening was a part of the ambassador’s visit to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Chornobyl Recovery and Development Programme (CRDP) project site. Vladyslav Atroshenko, Governor of Chernihiv oblast, and Deputy Director of Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency Urs Kluser and UNDP-CRDP staff accompanied the ambassador.
The event allowed visitors to overview the current recovery and development activities in Zamglai which are supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and UNDP-CRDP. The citizens of Zamglai organized themselves into three community organizations and mobilised resources from the Village Council, the Chernihivs Raiyon State Administration, and the UNDP-CRDP to implement development projects. In 2003 and 2004, these community organizations renovated of a youth centre, built a school workshop, sports field, and local health post, and provided household gas to homes. These projects have a total value of 46,000 USD. The UNDP-CRDP assisted these organizations throughout the process of project implementation. Simultaneously, Zamglai community organizations also renovated a cemetery, repaired street fences, cleaned wells and streets, repaired a water-pipeline, and maintained local village market – all independently of UNDP-CRDP financial support.
The UNDP-CRDP is a joint project of the UNDP and the Ukrainian government, which is represented by the Emergency Situations Ministry. The Programme began in September 2002 and forms the third phase of support provided by the United Nations for Chornobyl-affected areas. This current UNDP-CRDP phase will operate until March 2007. The Swiss government is an important donor for UNDP-CRDP, having contributed 274,000 USD to date.
Financial contributions by the Swiss government are channelled through Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency.
CRDP addresses the lingering consequences of the Chornobyl accident by supporting the Ukrainian government in its efforts to promote long-term psychological, social, economic and environmental recovery in affected areas. It supports international cooperation in affected communities, develops the capacity of national institutions to deal with the effects of the Chornobyl catastrophe, and disseminates information on Chornobyl-related issues both within Ukraine and throughout the world.
