Sergiy BUBKA

Date and place of birth 4 December 1963, Lugansk (Ukraine). Education In 1987 graduated from the Kyiv State Institute of Physical Culture; Doctor of Pedagogy (2002).

Languages Ukrainian, Russian, English, French.

Career Member of the Ukrainian Parliament (2002 – 2006), Member of the Ukrainian Parliament Committee on Youth Policy, Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism.

Sports Career Honoured Master of Sports (1983); six-time World champion (1983, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1997); gold medal in World Cup (1985), European Cup (1985), European Championships (1986); participated in four editions of the Games of the Olympiad: XXIV Olympiad in Seoul in 1988 (gold medal), XXV Olympiad in Barcelona in 1992, XXVI Olympiad in Atlanta in 1996; XXVII Olympiad in Sydney in 2000; world record beaten 35 times and current record holder with 6.15m; voted world's best athlete on several occasions.

Sports Member of the IOC Executive Board as athletes' representativeAdministration (2000-); member (1996-2002) then Chairman (2002-) of the IOC Athletes' Commission; Athletes' representative within the following IOC Commissions: Eligibility (1998), 'IOC 2000' (1999), Evaluation for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008 (2001), IOC 2000 Reform Follow-up (2002), member of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, Beijing 2008 (2005-).

Member of the Executive Committee of the NOC of Ukraine then President (2005-); IAAF Council member (2001); EOC Athletes' Commission Chairman (2001-2002). In 2007 Sergiy Bubka was elected IAAF First Vice-President.

Titles and Awards The Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1998), the Order of Lenin (1989), the Order of Merit, Hero of Ukraine (2001), Honorary Award of the President of Ukraine (1994). In 1997 Mr. Bubka was named “Champion of Champions” by the French sports daily l’Equipe. He is three times holder of the title “World Sportman of the Year”. In 2003 UNESCO Director General designated Sergiy Bubka UNESCO Champion for Sport.

Sergiy Bubka, who passed the six-metre mark 44 times, became an international star of pole vaulting. He went on to found the Annual International competition “The Pole Stars” in Ukraine. Bubka is the founder, sponsor and trainer of a children’s sports club in Donetsk, which has over 300 members. He is also a member of the Public Regional Coordination Council for Social Protection of Disabled Children and Orphans. Sergiy Bubka is surely one of the most famous athletes in the world and also considered one of the most outstanding sportsmen of modern times.
