30 January, 2008 Kiev hosted a training – seminar “Quality and safety of fur products” which was organized by Consumer Society and Citizen Networks together with civil society organization Ukrainian Association of Furriers and Ukrainian producers of fur products.
Anatoliy Livyy, president of the Association told journalists about the history of fur industry in Ukraine, origin of professional associations and problems affecting the industry currently. “Despite enforced customs supervision procedures, Ukrainian market is flooded with a large number of counterfeited, low-quality, smuggled fur produce”, remarked he. “Consumer must therefore be extremely cautious and informed while choosing a fur coat or hat”. Fur product manufacturers also voiced their concern regarding counterfeits and informed the audience about technology of fur raw material processing and tailoring, ways of defining quality of fur, as well as methods of telling an original product from a counterfeited one.
«Hazardous as a skin of an infected animal can be, it is not the only thing a consumer has to bear in mind when buying a fur product. Chemical solutions, paint and even water with which the product was treated through the technological process can also pose a threat to a person wearing it”, the experts warned. Considering this, the attending public was also armed with recommendations as to what documents have to be requested from sellers of fur products. «A fur product that has no accompanying hygienic, veterinary certificate as well as that of origin should be regarded as potentially unsafe for consumers”, underlined the experts and strongly recommended to claim documents witnessing the origin of a product
