15 June 15, 2007. Kyiv, Ukraine. The Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced sadness at the death of Kurt Waldheim, the former United Nations chief and Austrian President who has died at the age of 88.
The following statement was issued by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
“The Secretary-General learned with sadness of the passing of Kurt Waldheim, the fourth Secretary-General of the United Nations and former President of Austria.
The Secretary-General notes that Mr. Waldheim served the United Nations at a crucial period in the history of the Organization, from 1972 to 1981. The Secretary-General extends his condolences to Mr. Waldheim’s family, as well as to the Austrian Government and people.”
Before his appointment as Secretary-General, Mr. Waldheim served in numerous senior political and diplomatic posts for Austria, including as Foreign Minister and two stints as Permanent Representative to the UN.
