SBU Probing Report On Involvement Of SDPU (u) Ex-Leader Medvedchuk In Organizing Vote Buying System At Kyiv Elections (19:35, Monday, May 19, 2008)

Ukrainian News Agency

The Security Service of Ukraine is probing the report on involvement of the Social Democratic Party (united) ex-leader Viktor Medvedchuk in organizing a vote buying system during the Kyiv mayoral and city council elections.

Security Service acting Chief Valentyn Nalyvaichenko announced this at a press briefing.

He said the SBU has established that the most crucial violation of law during the election campaign in Kyiv is organization of a vote buying system with the use of the Babylon technology.

"The SBU is checking the information about Ukrainian national [Viktor] Medvedchuk's involvement in ordering this technology from Russian PR technologists," Nalyvaichenko said.

He noted that many political forces use this technology.

The only political force that does not use this technology is Our Ukraine, Nalyvaichenko added.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Kyiv Prosecutor's Office filed a criminal case in connection with allegations of bribery of voters in the Kyiv mayoral and municipal council elections.

The case was filed based on the materials of the Security Service of Ukraine who documented 35 cases of bribery of voters and uncovered a scheme of bribing voters called Babylon, which was devised by Russian political technologists.

The Verkhovna Rada decided in March to call early mayoral and city council elections in Kyiv for May 25.
