MAIN TOPICS OF RESEARCH
Haemostatic und immunity systems, heat beat variability, lipids peroxidization, ultrastructural study of venous blood cells and myocardial express-necroptans during acute and chronic ischemic heart disease, arterial hypertension, rheumatic and system diseases of connective tissue, diabetes mellitus, respiratory tract diseases, the role of Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection, as well as effects of hazardous professional environment and alcohol on the development of ischemic heart disease and toxic cardiomiopathy. Research methods used include immunological, haemostatic, biochemical, atomno-absorbtion blood spectography.
The number of research publications by DFM staff in 2001-2005 includes: 8 textbooks, 5 educational reading booklets, 4 information letters, 3 recommendations approved by Ukraine’s Health Ministry, 7 student instructions, 33 articles in Ukrainian journals and 9 in foreign journals. Members of the staff received 4 patents for their inventions, defended 2 DSci theses and 6 PhD theses.
The department staff has made 145 reports at the All- Ukrainian and the International congresses and conferences (Russia, Françe, Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Slovak Republic).

DFM is engaged in cooperation with the following institutions
Ukraine, Kyiv, Kyiv National Bohomolets Medical University (Skybchyk V.A., PhD, is writing his “MI and Unstable angine pectoris With 2-nd Type Diabetes Mellitus Patients: Pathogenesis, Pathomorphology, Kliniks and Treatment” under supervision by Netyazhenko V.Z., D.Sci., Academy of Medical Sciences Correspondence Member, Professor; Lviv, D. Halytsky Institute of Clinical Pathology(Solomenchuk T.M., PhD, is doing doctoral dissertation a research paper titled “ Causes of IHD development in Young Patients” supervised by D. Sci., AMS Academician, Prof. Zerbino D.D.; Ukraine, Kyiv, AMS Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology, (a project “Profilactics in Lviv City Ambulatories” under the WHO CINDI-Ukraine international program); Russia, Moscow, Myasnikov Research Institute as well as in cooperation with Ukraine’s AMS Instituteof Gerontology, Kyiv P. Shupyk Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Training, Dnipropetrovsk Medical Academy, Odesa Medical University.
For 2006-2010, DFM will focus its research on the impact of hazardous professional environment and alcohol on the clinics and laboratory blood tests in patients suffering from toxic cardiomiopathy and acure forms of ischenmic disease.
Two PhD theses written by DFM staff members are nearing completion. The target for 2005 is to defend 2 DSci and 4 PhD theses.

ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION
Cardiology, Rheumatology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine to pre-attestation cycle postgraduates; Family Medicine, Cardiology, Rheumatology and Urgent Medicine to specialization cycle postgraduates; Clinical ECG, Arhythmology and Electrocadiostimulation, Urgent Conditions in Cardiology to thematic upgrading cycle postgraduates. In addition, DFM staff provide training for internship doctors at the following specialization cycles: Family Medicine and Urgent Medical Treatment. We also teach Nursing in Family Medicine and Nursing in Gerontology and Geriatria courses. In 2000-2005, DFM provided training for 228 in-residence doctors, 601 medical doctors taking a specialization course, 1936 doctors taking a pre-attestation course, and 583 doctors taking a thematic upgrading cycle postgraduates.
To improve academic training for family doctors, DFM drew up and published sets of computerized tests in three volumes for doctors of various qualification categories as well as for in-residence doctors.

MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS
DFM staff is involved in practicing (diagnostics and treatment) in the Lviv Emergency Hospital’s Infarction Department (capacity: 60 patients, including 6 intensive therapy patients), Cardiology Department (60 patients). DFM staff has also access to other hospital departments. 96 percent of our patients suffer from cardiology ailments, of these 70 per cent with various forms of the ischemic heart disease. DFM has productive cooperation with Lviv Emergency Hospital to reach out to outpatients in Lviv and the region. All DFM staff are involved in practicing, with assistants, postgraduates and clinical ordinators working 2 shifts a month. Professors and associate-professors make rounds and consult patients. In 2005, DFM staff consulted 25,852 patients and provided treatment to 388 inpatients.  DFM staff introduced 13 new methods of diagnostics methods, 15 methods ofr treatment and prophylactics DFM is a coordinating and syllabus-setting center for training family doctors in Ukraine’s western regions. Professor J.Kiyak, DSci, is member of two scientific boards for defending DSci and PhD dissertations in physiology, pathoanatomy and hygiene at Danylo Halytsky Lviv Medical University as well as cytology, Cell Biology and Histology at Institute of Cell Biology of UkraineNAS. He is also head of the Lviv oblast branch of the Ukrainian Association of Experts in microcirculation, heamoreology and thrombo formation; member of the editing board of the Lviv medical journal and member of the Ukrainian Association of Internist Doctors.  AMS Academician and Professor Ye. Zaremba is head of the Lviv oblast Association of Family Doctors; vice-president of the Association of Family Doctors of Ukraine and acting member the world (WONCA) and European organizations of family doctors and general practitioners. Prof. Zaremba is also member of editing boards of such journals: Practical Medicine, Ukrainian Cargiology Journal, Ukrainian Rheumatology Journal, and Family Medicine. She is also member of the board and presidium of the Ukrainian Therapeutic Society, member of the scientific board for dissertations on internal diseases at the Kyiv P.Shupyk Medical Academy for post-graduate education.
