EU-funded Project, “Strengthening Multisectoral Approaches towards HIV/AIDS Prevention among Youth in Ukraine” (SMAHAPY) is organizing a three-day “Combined training for multisectoral service assessment and strategic planning” on August 28 – August, 30.

The training is intended both: to train participants on applied principles in Monitoring and Evaluation of HIV/AIDS prevention and HLS promotion in multisectoral cooperation and to discuss the necessity, study processes and mechanisms of introduction of Strategic Planning to prevent HIV spread and minimize negative effects from HIV/AIDS epidemic. The Strategic planning will be approached in the context of multisectoral approach, aiming to assure joining resources and capabilities of all the parties interested in this problem.

The first phase of the mentioned training was an on-site training on Monitoring and Evaluation of service provision held on 16-17 August in Lviv and 20-21 August in Donetsk, where trainees learned the basic principles of Monitoring and Evaluation in social services. During the second phase the trainees will learn how to modify the Monitoring and Evaluation principles in any project design and on regular basis.

The organizers of the round table invited representatives from Donetsk, Lviv and Odesa Departments of Education of oblast state administrations, Health Departments of oblast state administrations, Oblast Social Services for Family, Children, and Youth, representatives of Regional Coordination Councils and nongovernmental organizations.

SMAHAPY has been implemented in Ukraine since April 2005. This EU project helps the Ukrainian Government fight HIV/AIDS epidemic in Ukraine by improving educational measures for the prevention of HIV/AIDS among the youth through mobilization and cooperation of national multisectoral stakeholders pursuant to the National Program for Fighting HIV/AIDS for 2004 through 2008.

Basically, the Project focuses on strengthening the capacities of service providers in the area of health, education and services in the social sector and for the minors through multisectoral strategic planning and management for the purpose of effective promotion of healthy lifestyle and prevention of HIV/AIDS among the youth.

EU-funded project “Civic Education, Ukraine” organizes a three-day workshop on the theme of ‘The Democratic School’ 11-14 August 2007, Zalizny Port village, Kherson oblast

On 11-14 August 2007, EU-funded project “Civic Education, Ukraine” will hold a three-day workshop on the theme of ‘The Democratic school’. Six teams of teachers, students and parents from project pilot schools from Volyn, Kherson, Vinnitsya oblasts and Kyiv (school ¹ 30, Vinnitsya, lyceum ¹ 100 «Podil» and Kyiv gymnasium of Oriental Languages, Kyiv, Dubechna school and Kiverska school in Volyn Oblast, Chkaliv school in Kherson oblast) will participate. A team from Tsurupinsk city, Kherson oblast, has also been invited to participate.

The main aims of the activity are to prepare participants to lead school teams, to develop communication skills as a means of successful team interaction and social integration, to learn how to assess and monitor project activities and how to find partners, supporters and resources for the process of action plan implementation.

The workshop follows up the previous one held in Lviv in May and is led by a team of trainers, including one from the project’s Polish consortium partner organization, the Center of Civic Education, Warsaw, Poland, members of the project’s Extra-curricular Activities Working Group, trainers of All-Ukrainian Association “Nova Doba” and the project’s pilot oblast coordinator for Kherson oblast.

Workshop topics include: Successful communication as means of effective team interaction and social integration, Leadership within the school community, Social projects as a learning and management activity, Planning of project activities, Identification of possible options for activities, Risks and assumptions, Preparation of the “Decision Tree”, Project assessment and monitoring, Fundraising, Search for partners and supporters,, Public Relations as a component of a community activity.

Over the next few months it is expected that groups from the participating schools will implement the activities identified during the workshop and present the results of those activities.

EU-funded Project, “Strengthening Multisectoral Approaches towards HIV/AIDS Prevention among Youth in Ukraine” (SMAHAPY) is organizing a visit of German expert to Ukraine

EU-funded Project, “Strengthening Multisectoral Approaches towards HIV/AIDS Prevention among Youth in Ukraine” (SMAHAPY) is organizing a four-day visit of Farid Mueller, project expert, Hamburg member of the parliament on 08th of August – August, 11th. The expert will provide series of trainings and will have meetings with NGO representatives and media, decision makers in the cities of Odesa and Kyiv.

The training for the service providers in Odesa is intended to improve services in multisectorial HIV prevention based on the best international practices and to strengthen multisectoral cooperation between service providers, as well as to extend their abilities in effective policy formation regarding HIV/AIDS problem and healthy lifestyle promotion. Another meeting with politicians, lobbyists and media is planned to strengthen the stakeholders’ experience in advocacy and HIV prevention policy lobbying.

The organizers of the visit invited the representatives of the Odesa Regional Council and the Regional State Administration, service providers for youth and HIV-positive people, NGO representatives, politicians and media representatives to series of meetings with the international expert and politician from Germany.

Farid Mueller is a politician and well experienced in organizational development, financing, media management and communications, service development, policy making, strategic planning regarding multisectoral cooperation in HIV/AIDS and drug addiction prevention, advocacy and human rights protection of marginalized groups of people. He will share the best practices in policy lobbying and strengthening multisectoral cooperation in service provision for the prevention of HIV and Healthy Lifestyle promotion and will deliver his experience in developing and conducting public awareness campaigns for improving HIV/AIDS prevention.

In Kyiv Farid Mueller will meet Head of the Division of the Content of Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy representatives, as well as HIV-service organizations and sexual minority groups’ representatives. Journalists actively covering the topic of HIV are invited to a separate meeting to discuss existing experience and problems in media involvement into drawing public attention towards social and economic challenges that faces the country regarding HIV.
