INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY FOR GHANAIANS ABROAD

A window of opportunity has been opened to Ghanaians in the Diaspora as they now have the opportunity of investing at home. Under the newly -introduced Rural Enterprises Development Programme of the President Kufuor administration, the 138 district assemblies in the country are to establish three commercially-viable industries in which Ghanaians living abroad can buy shares in district enterprises established in communities where such Ghanaians come from. Former Ghanaian minister of trade, industries and president's special initiatives {PSIS}, Mr. Alan Kyerematen disclosed this in an interview recently with the Voice magazine correspondent. He said the new programme is another way of stimulating industrial growth by encouraging Ghanaians living abroad to invest their fortunes at home. The beauty of the programme, according to
 
Kyerematen is that each district enterprise will have a joint-share holding structure involving the private sector, the district assemblies and the communities them¬selves." So, it's a win-win situation", he said." Even though it will be more driven by the private sector, the communities as well as
 
the district assemblies can buy shares in these projects".
The minister stated further that the government has also introduced the Technology Improvement Programme which seeks to support local industries to acquire new technology and equipment to enhance their level of productivity. He said the industrial sub-contracting and partnership exchange programme was another scheme aimed at linking small and medium enterprises {SMEs} to large companies so that the large companies can outsource their non-core activities to the SMEs. Mr. Kyerematen said the Venture Capital Fund set up last year was to help many potentially-viable but distressed companies to recapitalize and bring them back on track.
