Pastor Sunday Adelaja: Incredible, Humble and Phenomenal

I had the good fortune to discover the ministry of Pastor Sunday Adelaja through his spiritual son Pastor Yuri Binder (Brooklyn, NY). I was able to visit Pastor Yuri and his wife Tatiana in Brooklyn before Pastor Sunday came to New Jersey to speak at an annual conference.

I was amazed when I learned of the accomplishments of Pastor Sunday in the Ukraine (former Soviet Union). Pastor Sunday studied journalism in Kiev as a young man, learned how to speak Russian and started a church. Today he has the largest church in Europe. Yet Pastor Sunday is not your typical Pastor.

Unlike many Pastors who are keepers of the aquarium, Pastor Sunday after building a strong local church consistently takes his best leaders and releases them to help his young Pastors succeed in planting new churches. This is how he multiplies himself after his kind and has planted over 300 churches throughout the world. Pastor Sunday wholeheartedly believes in those he has trained.

Pastor Yuri and I met Pastor Sunday at the airport when he arrived. Though surely he had jet lag upon arrival, Pastor Sunday was personable and friendly upon arrival. When he ministered in New Jersey, he happily took time after ministering to spend time with the young Russian and Ukrainian church members attending Pastor Yuri’s church.

The last day Pastor Sunday was in America during that visit, he ministered at a church in a run down area of New York. He preached his heart out just as if he were speaking to thousands. After he ministered as we drove him to the airport, he poured his heart out to Pastors Yuri and Tatiana. Then when at the airport he sat with me and talked for 20 minutes.

Pastor Sunday told me how he birthed his church. He went out on the streets everyday and passed out tracts. People called him a monkey and many other unkind names. Nevertheless he stood strong and continued as a mature disciple in Christ.

Today Pastor Sunday is highly celebrated in Ukraine and has helped revolutionize his national government. His congregation consists of over 98% white people who dearly love him. Pastor Sunday certainly has made God and homeland of Nigeria proud. He broke the barriers and created something out of nothing.

What is most exciting is instead of resting in his own success, he continues to train and empower the next generation of ministers to do likewise. Europe and the world needs more men like Sunday Adelaja.
