INCREASE IN NUMBER OF TOURIST VISITS TO BULGARIA |

From January to September 2005, more than 6.1 million foreigners visited Bulgaria. This is six per cent higher than the same period last year, according to National Statistical Institute data. Nearly 3.5 million foreigners holidayed in Bulgaria. According to the statistics, most of the tourists came from Germany, followed by those from Greece, the UK, and Macedonia. The number of visits by Greek, Macedonian, Polish, Slovak, and Hungarian tourists decreased. Income from hotel accommodation to September exceeded 428 million leva. About 351 million leva came from foreign tourists. Most of them stayed in Bourgas, followed by Varna. The turnover from Sofia hotels was 67.6 million leva, Dnevnik newspaper reported. Nearly 10 per cent more Bulgarians travelled abroad during the first nine months of 2005 compared to the same period last year. More than 3.2 million people travelled outside the country, most on business trips. The number of Bulgarian tourists who travelled abroad is slightly less than one million |
