1. What should I look for?

If you're simply printing pictures it's recommended that you purchase a printer designed specifically for producing photographic prints (which will provide much better results than a general purpose printer will). Then your decision is whether to buy a dye-sublimation printer or an inkjet printer. There are many considerations involved in such a decision, namely: (1.) The quality of the prints it produces. (2.) The speed with which they are achieved. (3.) How easy the printer is to use. (4.) And of course, the price.
2. Dye-Sublimation or Inkjet?

Dye-sublimation printers are said by many to deliver the closest quality to a conventional print, but recent advancements in inkjet technology have enabled the process to significantly close the gap. However, dye-sub printers "sublimate" or sink the colored dyes into the paper, thereby mixing evenly with the other colors and producing a continuous tone much like a regular print. Advantages of this process are that the prints come out extremely detailed and smooth and don't fade as quickly as many inkjet prints do, so they last longer. But much like deciding which is better - chocolate or vanilla - the true test of which is better between dye-sub and inkjet is how the results appeal to you.
(*You can take a look at Olympus dye-sublimation printers by visiting any of the following pages: P-440 and P-10.)
3. How fast can I get my prints?

The speed with which prints are produced varies depending on the size of the print you're making. A photo-quality 8" x 10" will take upwards of five minutes on most printers not of the top-end variety, with smaller print sizes such as 5" x 7" and 4" x 6" taking slightly less. Recent developments have enabled some printers to produce prints at a faster rate, such as the Olympus P-440 that delivers approximate 8" x 10" prints in just 75 seconds, without sacrificing anything in print quality. The Olympus P-10 offers 4” x 6” prints in 44 seconds by using the PictBridge standard. You can attach the camera directly via USB – cable to the P-10 and don’t need any PC for printing your pictures.
4. Is it difficult to use a printer?

Like anything else, printers come in all shapes and sizes, and some are easier to use than others. Nowadays most printers come with an easy USB connection for a faster interface. But depending on how old your computer is, it may not have a USB port so you may require a printer with a parallel port connection. Some printers can even connect directly to a digital camera so you don't need a computer. And some, like the P-440 also include a media card slot so you can simply insert your or xD picture Card card into the printer and print away. With the P-10 you can easily attach your camera directly to the printer and use the PictBridge standard to print your images without any PC.
5. What's a good price?

The price of a printer really depends on you. If you want more control over things like color, speed, and resolution, you're going to pay a premium price. Many printers, though, will be well within your reach - such as the P-440 which costs just under € 550. But you should also factor in costs incurred after your purchase such as paper, ink, etc. Some of these consumables can be rather costly (though the cost for an A4 on the P-440 is only about € 3, very comparable to inkjet prints done on photo grade paper, and less expensive than 203 x 258 mm enlargements from a film processing lab or printing kiosk), but some also produce better results, so the end may come to justify the means. If you don’t need that large prints you can also chose the smaller P-10 for less than 270 € and about 45 cents per 4” x 6” print.
