Our center conducted the professional seminar “The review of the state-of the-art PC Operation Systems”. Victor Ostrovsky focused on the following issues: OS background, their classification and market trends. He demonstrated Windows, Linux, MacOS, FreeBSD, Solaris and SCO-UNIX,OS/2 – Warp Server, BeOS, JavaOS, QNX.Our alumni and schoolteachers of Computer Science attended the seminar.

Information technology is creeping slowly into our schools due to volunteering efforts of our alumni and IATP program. PIE’2000 Larysa Lyutaya arranged a practical session for the teaching staff of her school “Multimedia Techniques in Teaching English”. They are planning to introduce these innovative approaches into their regular curriculums.

Zaporizhya Draughts Federation arranged a practical session “Draughts on the Net”. They are planning to participate in the virtual draughts tournaments on the premises of our center. During the session checkers players visited lots of drafts sites and got acquainted with the details of registration in the tournaments.

Some Net surfers addicted to the Internet quite frequently balance on the edge of inhabiting the virtual reality confusing it with the real reality, the others quite deliberately plunge into it. Two parallel worlds “real versus virtual” coexist creating new lifestyles and new social problems. Our alumna Dana Makhachashvili arranged a meeting with the alumni and the Internet-addicted students to present her new site and her research results in the field of linguistics and IT.

The schoolteachers were excited to master multimedia teaching techniques at the practical session we arranged for them at our center. Simultaneously they conducted the methodology mobile meeting of Zhovtnevy district education council headed by Yevgeniya Kolesnik. All participants requested to be registered for Internet Basics courses.

We held the seminar for the teaching staff of translation departments. We introduced them to e-dictionaries (bilingual and multilingual), online encyclopedias and Net-based resources on theory and practice of translation and interpretation.

We conducted the training “Internet Basics” for the City Welfare Council personnel. Three trainings are being held within our cooperative program with the City Welfare Council.

Ann and Mac McGaha regularly visit Zaporizhzhia region. They raise the funds in the USA and donate them to the orphanages in Ukraine. On the eve of their departure for the US we arranged a meeting with the kids of the Christian school who visited Christian sites together with the McGahas. We will arrange a series of trainings for the orphanages of Zaporizhya and the region with their help when McGahas come back to Ukraine in February.

A supply of computers to the regional libraries sparkled the demand for computer and Internet skills among librarians. We arranged the first training for 10 librarians of Regional Children’s Library and Regional Youth Library.

Our center hosted David Pert, 3rd Secretary of the British Embassy in Ukraine, who had a meeting with the students of the English Language departments and our alumni. He told the students about the scholarship opportunities and exchange programs, supported by British Embassy. David Pert was impressed with IREX/IATP-3 program, its' objectives and the results we have achieved.

Our center contributed to the support of the international project developed for the rehabilitation centers. We arranged the training for the sociologists of this project to create their e-mail accounts to start efficient correspondence among the partners.

We arranged the seminar “Radio on the Net” with CC alumna Inna Bahtina, producer of the radio station Veliky Lug, as trainer. The innovative technology which is used in the state-of-the-art mass media attracted the numerous audience of journalism faculties. 40 students attended the seminar to listen to the first-hand information.

Ilya Shvets, IATP Trainer from Dnipropetrovsk, conducted seminar "Macromedia Flash" for the alumni of our center.

We continued our trainings with the rehabilitation centers. We arranged “Internet Basics” training for the children and their teacher of Zhovtnevy Rehabilitation Center.

In the framework of our cooperation with the city rehabilitation centers we conducted training “Internet Basics “ for the pedagogical staff, physically challenged kids and their parents of Komunarsky Rehabilitation Center.

We arranged a meeting with a professional actress, Honorary Artist of Ukraine, a member of National Writers’ Committee Tetyana Nescheret just before starting a web design course for a new group. Her site is being created at our center, which will contain information about her life and creative activities.

The schoolteachers of Computer Science are taking Web Design Basics course. This is a two-hour course to enable the educators to develop elementary web-design skills, which they will use to train their kids at schools.

Real estate business is expanding fast worldwide due to the use of Net technologies. CC alumnus Sergei Green conducted the seminar for our alumni to introduce them to the world of real estate,specifically, on the Net. At the beginning he disclosed the introductory information about the real estate market, information systems for real estate presentation in Ukraine and abroad, how and where to search for specific resources: search engines, catalogs, portals and professional resources. Under Sergei’s guidance the participants visited the sites of the famous real estate agencies and portals: realtor.com , realtor.com.ua, russianrealty.ru, homeseekers.ru, aviso.ua , privoz.net and others. One section of Sergei’s seminar was devoted to the prospects of Ukrainian real estate market development and the Net which might impact on its prosperity. The seminar was supported with a wide variety of handouts and facilitated with exclusive digital presentation.

The ice is broken. The target audience are standing in line at the entrance door of our center. The whole administration staff of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Art Museum with the director at the head flocked at the center. They started mastering computer skills from scratch, and delegated one representative to complete a web design training to create a site of the museum. Trainer Victor Ostrovsky is shaping his pedagogical skills training various audience.

Teachers of Computer Science attended the seminar “Internet Basics for educators”, which we arranged at their request to cope with the school curriculum. Governor Evgeniy Kartashov was pleased to hear that our activities match his extensive program: “A computer lab for each school”. The seminar was conducted by the volunteer Victor Ostrovsky.

Our center hosted the meeting of the English club. Saira Abbasey, Peace Corps volunteer, guides the regular meetings of the club. They are planning to arrange cultural events, participate in the chats with their peers and organize Internet- based seminars. Our FLEX and Undergraduate alumni have been invited to join the club.

Within the framework of Library Day celebration together with our partner we arranged several excursions for the city schools. We introduced the schoolteachers and their students to the world of Information Technology, Internet–based education and the objectives of our program.

Our center hosted Yevgeniy Kartashov, Governor, Olga Kasyan , Deputy Governor, Larisa Sizintsova, Head of Oblast Culture Council, Lyubov Didenko , Head of Oblast Press and Information Council and our partner Inna Stepanenko. We told the honored visitors about our programs, their objectives and our targeted audience. Zaporizhzhia Governor together with Mayor Alexander Polyak initiated the extensive computer program “A computer lab for each school”, therefore, Governor was pleased to hear about our pilot program which we developed for the schoolteachers of Computer Science.

The IREX Undergraduate Recruiting Conference arranged by Andrea Kalan, Director of Academic Programs, on the premises of our center could hardly accommodate about 90 undergraduate students of Zaporizhya universities. Andrea’s presentation was so impressive and persuasive that our center has been overcrowded for several days in a row with the students who are willing to get electronic applications to participate in the program. Zaporizhya Undergraduate alumni helped Andrea promote the program in the region.

After attending the summer CEN seminar PIE’2002 Larisa Lyutaya started her regular activities with her colleagues and students at our center.They have participated in a series of the virtual games moderated by CEN centers.Her team is planning to moderate one of the games,and participate in the English games which will be launched soon.

Zaporizhya IATP center arranged the seminar "JavaScript for Web Development" for its' users.Those visitors who have already created and hosted their web sites were invited to participate in the seminar.The participants mastered the JS techniques to modify the quality of their virtual pages.

Our center arranged a meeting with Fulbright finalist Prof. Zatsny on the eve of his departure for the University of Texas, Austin. Soon we will start publishing a series of the articles which Prof. Zatsny submitted during the meeting. They cover a wide range of linquistic and sociolinquistic aspects of Language and Society interrelationships.

Business Community Connections alumni, who just returned from the USA, were heartily hosted by City Mayor Alexander Polyak.The alumni presented the mayor with the book “ 150th anniversary of Milwaukee”, which they brought from the USA as a gift from Milwaukee Mayor John Nortquist with his signature.The alumni passed Nortquist’s invitation to Polyak to visit Milwaukee and establish friendly contacts and become sisters cities. The meeting was arranged by alumna Tamara Ogorodova, Head of City Welfare Council.

We invited Peace Corps Volunteers to our center to participate in the chat to share their opinions about Ukraine and its culture. They actively took part in the discussions of cultural differences, stereotypes, which are always negative, and ECA exchange programs, which enable to break these stereotypes down.

The alumni of Zaporizhya center were impressed with Dnipropetrovsk Trainer Ilya Shvets' performance at the mobile seminar "Web-site promotion ". The participants highly appreciated Ilya's professionalism, his wide range of handouts and prompt references to numerous sites on the Internet which logically supported the structure of his seminar.

Our center arranged the seminar for the schoolteachers of English "Audio and Video Internet-Based Resources". The participants listened to and watched a wide selection of audio and video catalogs offered by BBC and Voice of America. We discussed the methodological approaches of using these resources for teaching purposes. We encouraged the teachers to start developing teaching Internet-based materials.


17.07.2002

Our center invited 9 professional artists to take a course on Computer Graphics. The participants who are planning to create their online galleries were able to get acquainted with the graphic files formats and a selection of optimal parameters for scanning various pictures. The artists used Photoshop to work with scanned pictures and to convert their formats and sizes. The training was conducted by our volunteer Zemlyanoy Maxim, a professional computer programmer. After the training 4 artists were registered to complete a web-design course, 3 artists selected Internet Basics to start with. This is the first training in the framework of our cooperative activities with the culture institutions.

The ethnographer, writer, photographer Vladimir Suprunenko , whose site www.zaporizhya.iatp.org.ua/supr we published recently , arranged a seminar at our center after he had returned from his cycling trip together with Alexander Zayets exploring the ethnographic diversity of Zaporizhya region. The materials of the expedition will be published on his site.

The most FLEXible alumni flocked together at our center to share their impressions and experience. The maps and web sites of the schools where our alumni stayed were quite popular at our event. The first question about cultural shock and its outcome were promptly ridiculed by teenagers who easily adapted to new environment and communities.They confessed that the exchange program empowered them to be on a mission to explore into new culture and new lifestyle , and they were conscious of the undertaking the exchange students were expected to fulfill – to expand and multiply the knowledge about Ukraine in some communities where it was mainly associated as a part of Russia. Some alumni won laurels in the academic field revealing their medals, certificates and diplomas. They were quite sensible not to argue about the education systems – they clearly stated they might be different, and each system has its own advantages.

In the framework of our cooperation with the youth organizations and clubs our center hosted Zaporizhya Federation of Checkers. Vitaliy Kulish, the regional checkers champion, who created the web site of his Federation at our center, conducted the training “Internet Basics” for the junior section of the checkers players. They visited their own site, which is constantly updated, the online magazine Ladya and some American sites devoted to the history and distinctive features of this game variations. We offered them to participate in some online checkers tournaments.

The trainer of IREX/IATP Zaporizhya Martin Gayevsky conducted the seminar “Web promotion for advanced users”.The visitors of the center who have already created and hosted their sites attended it.They learnt how to promote their sites through engine systems, ratings, how to use banner networks, counters and information blocks for promotion.

Our center participated in the chat for Western NIS alumni presenting the site developed by Vladimir Prudky: www.prudky.iatp.org.ua. The primary motto of the site:”People should hunt with a camera to enjoy flora and fauna of our planet”.Vladimir promotes and advertises ecotourism around fascinating southern steppe regions of Ukraine.

Remembering America with Undergraduate alumni gradually transformed into informal cultural orientation for Undergraduate finalists.Together with Peace Corps volunteer Kyle Laird we enjoyed perfect American accent our alumni mastered during their stay in the USA. Face-to-face communication empowered the finalists with new information they might require in the USA. We visited the sites of the universities our alumni stayed at and our finalists are going to stay. And lastly, we have arranged the most exciting event at our center. The Undergraduate alumni were overbrimming with emotions, excitement and willingness to share new experience and happiness they enjoyed,and to confess their true stories not only of their academic achievements, but also of fun they had.

Our center arranged the seminar “Internet basics” for the physically-challeged kids of the club "Dzerelo". This club is functioning within the framework of Kommunarsky District Education Council and takes care of the disabled kids of the whole district. We developed the training program for this club and invited the instructor of this club to create a web site. 7 kids attended this event. Several other groups will be taking courses during the summer time.

The trainer of Zaporizhzhya IATP-3 center Martin Gajevsky together with the head of the City Club "Yuniy Tekhnik" Victor Sklyar conducted an introductory training "Internet Basics" for the children.Victor Sklyar supervises radiodesign,sport locating and computers sections of the club.The boys of this club were the first visitors of our center and have already developed the skills of surfing the Internet.This training is the first among a series of the other introductory ones for the children organisations of our city.We are planning to continue such trainings regularly and get involved the other children and youth clubs.The next visitor of our center will be a junior team of Zaporizhzhya Checkers Federation.

Our center started a web design training for a new group consisting only of alumni. We are planning to enhance the content of our site with the help of our alumni's creative potential.

Grants orientation seminar with IATP Expansion,Partnership and Grants Coordinator Bogdan Mykytsey assembled a large community-teachers,NGOs,university international departments officers,librarians,lawyers,ecologists,governmental officials,students,alumni- who are going to apply for grants announced by IREX/IATP-3. Bogdan' grants program presentation persuaded,inspired and empowered the majority of the participants to complete the application forms.The audience in our center turned out to be rather inquisitive.A lot of questions followed after the presentation about the content,themes,budget,reports of a grantholder, cost- share budget,co-authors,etc.

PIE alumna Larysa Lyutaya continues her multiplying activities with her colleagues.She usually invites to our centers the teachers of different disciplines - chemistry, physics, music, literature.Sometimes she prefers individual work and instructs some teachers how to search for specific information. She contributed her article to the conference, is completing an application form to create a web site of her school and supervises a large group of schoolchildren who participate in the exchange programs and debates.

Together with Community Connections alumna Tamara Ogorodova, the Head of Labor and Social Protection Council, Zaporizhzhya City Council, we arranged the visiting training session at the Zavodsky Reabilitation Center for the disabled and physically challenged children. Tamara Ogorodova initiated the project of setting up such centers in every district of the city. She felt more confident of such centers establishment after she returned from the USA where she visited the similar institutions. Together we developed the cooperative program and the schedule of trainings “Computer Basics”, “Internet Basics” for these centers.

Virtual conference “Internet and Society: sociolinguistic, cultural and business aspects” scheduled as a local event expanded its barriers and content.The articles were submitted not only from Zaporizhzhya, but also from Odesa, Lviv, Zhytomyr,Khmelnytsky. The contributions cover a wide range of multifaceted IT impact on society: business , banking, culture, ecology, education, journalism, law, linguistics, libraries, tourism,welfare. Zaporizhzhya ECA alumni actively participated in the conference. The discussion of the presentations guided by RSEP alumnus Gleb Maslov on the different aspects of the Internet gradually transformed into uncompromising debates on ‘cons’ and ‘pros’ of the Internet influence on society.

Our partner Inna Pavlivna, Director of Zaporizhzhya Oblast Library, participated in the virtual conference “Internet and Society: sociolinguistic, cultural and business aspects” which was convened on the premises of our center. She submitted article "Internet and Public Libraries” and took part in the discussion of IT impact on society.

Our center hosted the demonstartion English classes based on the Internet resources.The classes were developed by the school teacher Yevgeniya Kolesnik who visited all English Internet-based courses arranged in our center.Yevgeniya Kolesnik along with some other school teachers is multiplying knowledge and skills acquired in our center.

Simultaneous Pre-Departure Training for finalists of ECA funded programs,Ukraine

Zaporizhzhya IREX/IATP-3 center was overcrowded with the finalists of TEA, FSA Undergraduate and FSA FLEX programs. 30 finalists participated in a Pre-Departure Training. Some of them developed computer basics skills, registered their email accounts and got experience of participating in a chat. Now all the participants of the event know that our IATP center is their second home and we are happy to welcome them in it any time.

ComCon Eduard Bobrovitskiy arranged a graduation ceremony of his journalism club.13 school graduates were awarded the certificates of junior journalists who became regular visitors of our center.

ComCon alumnus Eduard Bobrovitskiy,press secretary of the Regional Taxation Council, arranged his first training session at our center for the junior jounalists of his Journalism Club.Several years ago he volunteered to set up this club on the premises of the newspaper Zaporoska Zich to educate future journalists.Our center will host this club,and they will have regular meetings here.

10 Community Connections alumni (Zaporizhzhya Ecology Group, which recently returned from the USA) met in IATP center to share impressions, contacts and professional experience received abroad. American Fulbright scholar, Professor of Environmental Studies Costas Hadjilambrinos participated in this informal event, which resulted into three hours debates on environmental issues.

FLEX alumni of our center had an exciting web-conference with the students of Colorado schools. This event proves that the Internet makes friends. The students exchanged their addresses to continue contacts through email. Both sides prepared Power Point presentations of the participants, schools and cities. The master of the conference Dan Maas invited us to make such conferences regular involving more students.

Our center started a series of seminars devoted to innovative techniques in teaching English.For the first seminar we invited alumni and school teachers to practice CD-ROM -based and Internet-based multimedia techniques for teaching English.We are creating on the premises of our center the testing platform to implement Internet-based approaches ,and invite our alumni and school teachers to participate in our project.

Peace Corps Volunteer Kyle Laird arranged the meeting for the students who participate in the web-composition contest "Care and Unite". The web contest is held under the motto "Friendship through Education" to produce an educational web site that tells a story about how a local community cares. The main target of the contest is to collaborate by sending messages of hope, support and condolences to those affected by the September 11th tragedy. John Lobo, Associate Peace Corps Director, helped register 18 students at www.globalschoolhouse.com who submitted their compositions in the category Local Communities.

Our center arranged the first web-conference with the educators of Colorado and New Mexico. All English-speaking alumni - FLEX, PIE, TEA, Fulbright - were involved (altogether 10 participants). The idea of web-conference belongs to Dan Maas, Director of Technology Services, Longmont, Colorado and Fred Maas, teacher of mathematics, Santa Fe Prep School, New Mexico. The next web-conference will be arranged for students late this month.

PIE alumna Larisa Lyutaya is conducting a seminar for the teachers "Teaching English Based on the Internet". She is the most active alumna of our center. She has planned to arrange a series of seminars for school teachers and administrators.

The seminar "The registration and web site promotion" is conducted by the Professor of the Zaporizhzhya Humanities University Vladimir Golubev, the director of the Computer Crime Research Center. The seminar was attended by FLEX, PIE alumni and listeners of the web design courses.

Yulia Koryakina, Dnipropetrovsk Regional American Councils Coordinator visited our center to participate in the meeting of Nomination TEA committee which was held on the premises of our center.The committee includes Larisa Churikova, the inspector of the City Education Council who is responsible for FLEX, TEA, PIE programs and Peace Corps volunteer Kyle Laird.

Our center established contacts with the administrator of Community Connections (ecologists) in Chicago Rachael Sharon to help arrange the photo exhibition of Vladimir Prudkiy who is leaving together with his group for Chicago February 13.

The students of the Foreign Language Faculty, Zaporizhzhya Humanities University, initiated the penpals club on the premises of the center. The club is planning to start teleconferences and email correspondence with students and educators of Colorado, New Mexico and Texas universities and schools.

In the framework of partnership coorperation we started regular training sessions for our partner. Trainer Martin Gayevsky is running the training session for the librarians.

Zaporizhzhya center hosted the alumni event. That was the first alumni meeting of FLEX, TEA, PIE, Fulbright, RSEP and Community Connections programs. All alumni were welcomed by Alumni Coordinator Olga Yakimakho, Training Coordinator Maria Makovska and PAS Representative Natalia Yeremeyeva.

The meeting of two alumni generations: FLEX and FULBRIGHT. Doctor of Phylological Sciences, Head of Translation Depatment of the Zaporizhzhya State University Prof. Zatsniy Y.A. often visits our center. Our center maintains contacts with American universities where the Fulbright grantholder Zatsniy is invited to run lectures and do research in the field of the new wordstock development.

Flex alumni are making a catalog of online resources for testing during the seminar "Internet-based testing resources (placement tests, registration tests, TOEFL, IELTS) as independent scholastic aptitude control". Simultaneously they are being trained to participate in the National Internet-Based English Olympiad which is held by the Ministry of Education and Science.

Zaporizhzhya center starts its work in the new year with the house-warming event. Our partner supplied new office furniture to our center for 14 working seats.
