Fellowships for
Journalists from Russia/Ukraine/Belarus
German university offers
fellowships for young journalists
Russian, Ukrainian, and
Belarusian journalists are invited to attend a 12-week training and fellowship
program in Germany, organized by the journalism school of the Freie Universitat
in Berlin.
The program, "Journalisten
aus Russland" (Journalists from Russia), was created in 1999 to educate
young Russian journalists in the political, economic, cultural, and historical
relationship between Russia and Germany. Participants also examine the role of
mass media in democratic societies by discussing the press in contemporary
Germany.
The 2002 program, set to
begin April 1, is now being offered also to journalists from Ukraine and
Belarus interested in their own country's relationship with Germany.
Participants will attend
training seminars at the Freie Universitat for the first six weeks of the
program, after which they will work for six weeks at various German publications
around the country. The program includes a monthly stipend of 1500 Marks (U.S.$690)
and a one-time personal expense allowance of 1000 Marks (U.S.$460).
Applicants must be under
age 33, and must have sufficient academic and work experience with mass
media in their respective countries. Sufficient knowledge of German is also
required.
Applications, available online at jar.fu-berlin.de/de/bewerbung/formular.html,
must be submitted no later than November 23.
