Concerts, Fashion Week on the Way

by Paul Miazga

Unless a fan of classical music and ever-popular Chanson music, it’s easy to despair for want of variety of good music in Kyiv. However, within the space of a week, Kyiv music fans will enjoy the energy and sounds of two very renowned performers, namely British pop-rock band Muse and deejay duo the Chemical Brothers. Both are set to play the Sports Palace, with Muse appearing Oct. 13 (that’s this Saturday, folks) and the Chemical Brothers coming Oct. 18 (Thursday). Tickets for the shows on the floor (where else would you want to be at a good concert? Sitting?) range from Hr 130 to Hr 200 for the former and for just Hr 60 for the latter.

If the above news weren’t enough, the whole month of November promises to be one big concert with several popular jazz and vocal musicians returning to the capital and some new ones joining them as well.

November 1 marks the fourth visit to Kyiv by German acid jazz band De Phazz. Their concert at the Zhovtnevy (October) Palace off Independence Square will be a rather familiar affair as it’s a favorite venue for the group. Tickets are on sale now, priced from Hr 70 to Hr 500.

The Zhovtnevy Palace, a great venue for jazz concerts in general, will also host American jazz man Marcus Miller on Nov. 15. Miller’s performance will be part of a larger jazz festival cryptically called Do#dzh. Tickets from Hr 50 to Hr 450. And whether the Harlem Gospel Choir is part of the Do#dzh jazz festival or not, they’ll try to lift the roof off the palace with their heavenly, soulful sounds just two days later, Nov. 17. Tickets for this one-night-only performance range from Hr 70 to Hr 500.

Finally, if these great acts weren’t enough to sate even the most demanding of aural fetishists, Cape Verde’s legendary crooner Cesaria Evora will make a return trip to Kyiv’s Ukraine Palace concert hall on Nov. 20 for a one night show of her own. This larger-than-life superstar needs no introduction and her concert should not be missed. Tickets have been priced for this event from Hr 70 to Hr 700.

Note that all concerts, whether at the Zhovtnevy Palace, Sports Palace or Ukraine Palace kick off at 7pm with the lone exception being Marcus Miller, whose concert will start at 8pm.

Kyiv Fashion Week

After thumbing through my girlfriend’s – oops, make that fiancée; we got engaged in Canada back in August! – latest copy of Ukraine Elle magazine, I realized what a huge thing Ukrainian Fashion Week (Oct. 11-17; www.fashionweek.com.ua) has become! The magazine did some interesting profiles on some leading Ukrainian designers, such as Victoria Gres, Andre Tan and Lilia Poustovit, all of whom are starting to really make a name for themselves outside the country. So popular have Poustovit’s modern yet classically feminine designs become that she’s on the verge of opening her own boutique in London to go with the one she opened in Moscow some years back. It seems like heady stuff unless you fail to recall the visits to Kyiv for last year’s Fashion Week by Dolce & Gabbana and Paco Rabane.

Expect to see lots of big names in fashion making debut appearances at the event (to be held at ACCO Int’l, 40B Peremohy Prospect) over the coming days and weeks as Ukraine’s top names show their wares for the country and even the whole world to see. Should make for lots of juicy paparazzi pages in the local press.

“Cesaria Evora is just one of many excellent musical acts coming to town soon.” (www.livermusic.cz)
