MOSCOW (AP) - Russian telecommunications company Vimpel Communications said Monday it bought Corporation Severnaya Korona, a cellular operator in the country's Irkutsk region, from Tele2 Sverige AB of Sweden for about $232 million in cash.
VimpelCom said CSK's licenses cover a territory with a population of about 2.5 million. As of the end of June, CSK had more than 571,000 subscribers, which represents about 22 percent of the cellular market in the Irkutsk region.
"The acquisition of CSK substantially enhances our position in Russia and expands the communication options available to existing and new subscribers," said Nikolai Pryanishnikov, VimpelCom's executive vice president for Russia.
Following the acquisition of CSK, VimpelCom's operating area covers 75 regions of the 85 administrative regions of the Russian Federation.
The transaction has been approved by the Russian competition authorities.
