Changing Social Dynamics: Gendered Theories of Power, Control and Exclusion
(May 29th-June 4th, 2000)

Centre for Women's Studies, Zagreb, Croatia is pleased to announce a course "Changing Social Dynamics: Gendered Theories of Power, Control and Exclusion" to be held at the Inter-University Centre (IUC), Dubrovnik, Croatia from May 29th-June 4th, 2000. The course will be co-directed by: Joanna Regulska, Rutgers University, Biljana Kasic, Centre for Women's Studies, Zagreb, and Jasmina Lukic, Central European University Budapest.

Topic
The main objective of the course is to examine the gendering of the way in which change is being shaped, resisted, and accepted, and how it impacts on the existing social, political, and legal systems in Central and Eastern Europe. The course will focus on the following themes: theorizing power, gender locations and politics of change, theorizing exclusion, ideologies of identities and identities of resistance, spaces and sites of resistance, power of narration, building movements and constructing communities. The ambition of the course, consisting of lectures and discussions, is to address such questions as: How does theorizing of power and gender influence the choice of political strategies? What are the new ways of constructing gender in our respective societies? How do various geo-political locations effect formation and transformation of gender and sexual identities? What is new about "new" democracies when we think of gender? What are the subtle ways of exclusions behind the feminist call for inclusion of women? What modes of power and/or control are we (re)producing by our resistance?

The course is built on the assumption that intellectual dialogue among a diverse body of scholars from different geographical locations will result in a better understanding of the ways in which our particular locations within the changing social systems are influencing our own theoretical and political choices.

Invited resource persons: Barbara Einhorn (University of Sussex), Malgorzata Fuszara (University of Warsaw), Dasa Duhacek (Centre for Women's Studies, Belgrade), Darja Zavirsek (University of Ljubljana), Chris Corrin (University of Glasgow), Maria Suarez Lafuente (University of Oviedo).

Eligibility
The IUC courses are conducted at a postgraduate level. All postgraduate students interested in the topic may apply for the attendance. The course will be limited to 20 attendees, to provide sufficient space for a discussion.

The attendees should seek funds from their own institutions to cover the travel costs and accommodation. A limited financial support is available to the attendees from the Central and Eastern Europe.
