Civic Education assessment workshops

Kyiv, 19 May 2006

Two workshops were held in Kyiv and Vinnytsia on 16 and 18 May respectively to discuss student assessment issues as part of the Civic Education Ukraine project, a project funded by the European Union. The issue of student assessment relates to all the project’s components: curriculum development, teacher training, special needs education and community development and extra-curricular activities. The first workshop was held at Kyiv City In-Service Teacher Training Institute (ITTI) after Grinchenko and was attended by project working group members, international and national experts as well as ITTI staff. The second was held with a group of 30 history and civic education teachers for pilot and non-pilot schools in Vinnytsia oblast.

The workshops were led by the project’s International Assessment Expert, George Bethell. Workshop sessions included an introduction to the purpose and functions of assessment, matching assessment to curricular objectives and civic education competencies and a discussion of formative and summative assessment. Participants also worked in groups to provide feedback on current practice in Ukrainian schools, with particular reference to civic education, and on ways of using assessment to promote better teaching and learning.

The workshop materials will be distributed to all pilot schools and made available electronically. It is expected that further workshops will be held in September/October to discuss this issue further and to look at the development of valid and reliable test items.
