The Public Affairs Section sponsored the first Training of Trainers Course (TOT) in 2003. The trainers listed below completed this training and are available to conduct training sessions at schools throughout Ukraine. They can be requested through the Public Affairs Section. Workshop #1:        ADD COLOR TO MAKE ENGLISH TEACHING

We all are different and see our place in the world differently, and this affects our teaching. Though every teacher is unique, everyone follows certain basic principles in teaching. This workshop focuses on students’ comprehension as a way of differentiating between approaches to teaching. The Pyramid of Comprehension and Bloom’s Taxonomy help you visualize the whole picture. By the end of the workshop the participants will be able to use interactive techniques to make their lessons brighter.

 

Svitlana Kurysh has had ten years of teaching experience. As a PIE-2000 alumna, she was trained at Cincinnati University, college of Education, Ohio, USA. She is a Regional Coordinator of TESOL-Ukraine, and an active participant of regional and All-Ukrainian TESOL conferences.  She has developed her own seminars and workshops, such as “Add Color to Making English Teaching Brighter”, “Ways of Presenting Vocabulary”, and “Teaching Civics at School”. She is the author of several professional publications, including “Add Color to Making English Teaching Brighter,” “Teachers’ Guide for 7th grade”, “Teach and Smile”, and  “Methodological Puzzles”.

 

 

Workshop #2:                    COMMUNICATIVE GRAMMAR

The workshop deals with three stages of teaching grammar structures: presentation, practice (focused and free) and production. It focuses on characteristics of each of the stages and suggests a variety of activities to stimulate REAL communication while working on grammar.

 

Tetayna Luzhetska  worked as the Director of Studies at Kyiv State "INTERLINGUA" Language School for four years. She organized teacher training seminars and gave workshops for "INTERLINGUA" teachers. She also took part in the seminars for Kyiv region educational institutions held by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and OUP Ukraine.

 

Workshop #3:                COURSE DESIGN

This workshop aims to develop teachers’ awareness of some overall principles concerning course design. It also refreshes their knowledge and skills in designing and redesigning courses in order to encourage target student audience learning outcomes in their particular contexts. During the seminars (Part 1and Part 2) teachers will be able to discuss (in interactive form) all the stages of course design process and participate in developing examples for their classrooms.

Yuriy Kucher has had 21 years of teaching experience with students of all age groups (6 to adult). He is an alumnus of Partners-in Education Programm-98 for teachers of social sciences (host city - Los Angeles). His professional scientific interest is discourse analysis.

 

Workshop #4:        CREATIVE IDEAS FOR TEACHING YOUNG

The seminar will focus on using creative options to spice up everyday lessons that will keep children interested, entertained and willing to learn English. Attendees will gain useful information about how to more effectively teach English to YL through games, rhymes and songs. A variety of strategies for targeting kinaesthetic, visual and oral learning styles will be introduced.

 

Natalia Stasyuk has had 18 years of teaching experience with all levels of students. She is also a PIE Alumna and Regional TEA winner 2002-2003.

 

 

Workshop #5:  DEALING WITH MISTAKES AND ERRORS

Why chain yourself to the old boring correction of all mistakes and errors that students very often don't learn from? This presentation focuses on how to correct with maximum results. The workshop helps to differentiate between an error and a mistake and presents various ideas about how to correct students while teaching four language skills. In this interactive workshop participants will have a chance to invent their own symbols of correction. They may also recognize themselves in the many teachers' roles that are presented and discussed.

 

Zoya Pukha is a teacher of English and American Studies, a TEA Alumna ' 99, and a member of TESOL-Ukraine. She is also a coordinator of Nosivka District Resource Center  “New Millennium Perspective.”

 

 

Workshop #6:         DEVELOPING LISTENING COMPREHENSION

The focal point of this workshop is teaching two kinds of listening: listening for information and listening for study. Based on the communicative approach participants will learn a step-by-step procedure that includes pre-listening, active listening and post-listening activities aimed at the formation of cross-cultural competence.

 

Larysa Kalinina has a Ph.D. in Pedagogy, and has had 30 years of teaching experience. She has completed a number of internship programs in U.S. and British universities. The list of her publications comprises more than 80 papers.

 

Inna Samoilyukevich has a Ph.D. in Pedagogy, and has had 20 years of teaching experience. She has completed a number of internship programs in both U.S. and British universities, and has published more than 70 papers.

 

 

Workshop #7:         HOW TO BUILD UP YOUR VOCABULARY

At this seminar we will look at some ways of increasing vocabulary. Participants will engage in practical activities that reflect conventional approaches as well as new approaches. They will also learn techniques that allow students to increase their vocabulary dramatically.

 

Valeriy Sabirov has been teaching English for more than 10 years and has more than five years experience as a teacher trainer. As a teacher trainee he took part in 1996, 1997 English Summer Schools organized by the British Council, Ukraine in Kyiv with Trainers from Pilgrims (UK). He also participated in CELTA course held in Kyiv in April 2002 with trainers from Newcastle (UK). Since 1998 he has been a member of the Professional Development Team (PDT) of Teachers with the British Council, Kyiv. Mr. Sabirov has been an IATEFL Ukraine member since year 2000 and has presented in IATEFL Regional and all-Ukrainian conferences. He has published his articles in IATEFL Ukraine Newsletters. The sphere of his interests includes cognitive psychology, psychology of memory, gestalt approach, and using of psychodrama in education.

 

 

Workshop #8:               READING SKILLS FOR ESP

This workshop focuses on reading skills for ESP.  Since students do not always require the same level of comprehension, detail, or recall from our reading, this workshop teaches them to vary their technique and speed according to their purpose in reading. Our job as teachers is to help students identify these different purposes and to master the strategies best suited to achieving them. This workshop will define reading, examine the way we read, look at what we read for, and suggest activities for reading lessons.

 

Kateryna Uryvalkina is a prize-winner (3 times) of Regional Pedagogical Fairs. She was chosen “The Best Teacher of the Institute 2003”and she is the author of the handbook “English Literature” for students and teachers of secondary schools, and “Learn to Read English”. Her professional hobby is working with very young learners (3-6-years old).

Howard Gardner developed the theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI), which explores the eight different ways in which we are intelligent (linguistic, musical, intra-personal, interpersonal, bodily, mathematical, spatial, and naturalist intelligences). In this workshop, participants will learn various MI activities that encourage speaking skills.

Nataliya Shylova has been teaching English for over 20 years. She has completed several professional development courses, which have helped her find the right “key” to unlock her students’ potential and to spread these ideas among her colleagues. Schoolchildren, university students and people of business have been her students. Among her achievements are the First Class certificates of her students who passed PITMEN examination (Intermediate level) in 2000, and co-work with a team of professionals who designed a Curriculum for Secondary schools in 2001. Her aim is to make learning English motivating for students and rewarding for teachers.
