In the January 11, 1998 edition of The New York Times, a critical issue facing
Ukraine today was brutally and explicitly exposed to the world - the making
of innocent young Ukrainian women into the latest recruits for global
prostitution.

The article titled "Traffickers' New Cargo: Naive Slavic Women," written by Michael Specter, has been translated into Ukrainian.
It is published here on BRAMA with permission granted by
The New York Times
and the author as part of an effort to inform the Ukrainian public both in
Ukraine and abroad about the widespread recruitment of young women into
criminal servitude. Awareness of the problem is but the first step towards
solving it, and while there are agencies and organizations in Ukraine
equipped to deal with this issue, we fear that current efforts inhibited by
low funding levels are concentrated only in the larger metropolitan areas,
thus bypassing the many young women in the provinces who tend to be the most
vulnerable to this threat.
We appeal to our readers print the translated Ukrainian article directly
from the browser, make
copies if necessary, and mail it to your family and friends in Ukraine.
Help us reach us your daughters, your nieces, your cousins, your friends in
order to prevent further losses of young people to this sad fate.
