History of city

The first page of history of city is lost in depth of centuries of a world civilization and meanwhile remains not read.

In territory of modern city and his suburbs archeologists have found out the rests of settlements of a late Paleolithic, tripolskaya cultures, epoch of late bronze, chernjahovskaya cultures and the period of the Kiev Russia. Nearby to Uman scientists have found barrows of a Scythian epoch. As a whole here it is open and it is investigated about 50 various architectural monuments. In XI century Umanshchina have grasped the Mongolian hordes, and in XIV century she, as well as the majority of the Ukrainian grounds, has passed to possession of the Great Lithuanian princedom. Toward the end XVI centuries Umanshchina stayed object of the Polish colonization. In 1609 the general commission of Speech Pospolitoj has described so-called desert Uman. These grounds later named Umanshchina, the Polish government has presented to magnate Velentu Alexander Kalinovskom. The name of city, obviously, occurs from the river Uman which for the first time is mentioned in Supraslskaya annals in 1497. The first written memoirs about Uman is dated 1616.

Uman belongs to few cities in territory of Ukraine to what the Magdebourg right (1706a.) has been given. In 1648, in the beginning of national-liberation war of Ukrainian people against Poland, has been created Umansky shelfs, administrative and military unit which covered a part of present Cherkassk, Kirovograd and Vinnitsa areas. In 1670-1674 Uman was a residence right-bank of hetman Mihajlo Hanenko, that is time capital of Right-bank Ukraine. Except for the mentioned period, with 1566 for 1793 this territory together with northern part of present Odessa area was part of Bratslavskoe voevodstvo, boundary with Moldova. Has become famous Uman and in days of Koleivshchiny as one of the centers of popular uprising. In 1796 works on creation of landscape park "Sofievka " which creation basically has been completed in 1800 have begun. Today it is the known dendrology park, an outstanding instruction of landscape gardening art. In 1793 with the second Section of Poland Right-bank Ukraine has been attached to Russian empire. Uman too became a part of the Russian state, povetovym city of the Kiev province. Since 1839 Uman - the center of military settlements, city of military authorities, officials, merchants and priests. Expansion and a putting in order of the central part of city from now on begins. From second half XIX - the beginnings of XX century Uman had expressive character of dvorjansko-merchant city: brick houses, the streets covered with a stone blocks and covered by lamps.

In 1899 from Odessa to Uman the Main school of gardening has been transferred. The statistical information "Uman - 1900" testifies that for that time it was cultural-educational city. In the first decades of XX century the city developed as industrial centre of the big agricultural area which during Great domestic war of 1941-1945 has undergone to significant destructions.

Uman. Sofievka

Umansky state dendrology park "Sofievka" of NAN of Ukraine is a masterpiece of world landscape gardening art of the end XVIII - the beginnings of XIX centuries. The park was stretched on the area of 154,7 hectares on suburbs of the ancient city of Uman of the Cherkassy area. It is a sample of a landscape park composition of water, the ground, architectural constructions and sculptures.

The park in 1796 is based by rich Polish magnate Stanislav Shchensnym Pototsky in honor of the wife of the beauty-greek woman of Sofia, and has been presented to it in day of its name-day in May, 1802.

The idea of creation of park in romantic style with use of the Roman and Greek mythology belonged to the Sofia.

First architect of "Sofievka" talented Polish military engineer Ludwig Mettsel was. Founders of park were F.Pototsky's serfs. Worked in park daily about 800 people. In short term this masterpiece which during 200 years amazes visitors with the beauty has been created. Surprising landscapes, exotic plants, antique sculptures, reservoirs, cascades, fountains, stone grottoes - can be seen all this, having visited park.

After S.Shch.Pototsky's death the park has passed to possession of his wife of Sofia, and after its death the park was inherited by son Alexander.

In 1832, after the Polish revolt which was supported by A.Pototsky, all his manors have been confiscated and transferred to the Kiev state chamber.

From 1836 to 1859 the park was in charge of Management of military settlements and Tsaritsyn a garden " referred to (informally) ", the academician of architecture A.I.Shtakenshnejder for creation of new architectural constructions here has been invited. It is the period of blossoming of park. Many constructions are under construction: the Main entrance gate, the Main avenue, and park incorporates to city of the first the street named Garden.

In 1859 the park has passed to conducting the Main school of the gardening transferred from Odessa to Uman. The park becomes educational base of school, his flora is enriched; from rare kinds of plants scientist naturalist V.Pashkevich creates the Formal garden. Now the Formal garden borrows the area about 2 hectares in northern part of "Sofievka" and borders in the West with Parterny amphitheater, and in the south - on the Champs Elysee. In the Formal garden grows about hundred kinds and forms of trees and bushes from 15 till 100 and more years.

After revolution and civil war "Sofievka" it is renamed into park of name III- Internatsional, exists at school of gardening which became technical school later, institute, and now Umanskaya agricultural Academy.

In 1929 "Sofievka" it has been declared by National park, to it the independent status, and till 1955 she some times is given to various departments and the ministries.

During Great Domestic war in park many architectural monuments have been destroyed. After clearing of Uman on March, 10, 1944 the park has renewed the work.

In 1955 "Sofievka" it is transferred to conducting NAN of Ukraine. Now here is the biggest center on introduction and acclimatization of plants of forest-steppe of Pravoberzhnaya Ukraine. It is totaled more than 2 thousand plants. In dendropark four scientific departments work, is under construction unique in Ukraine of scientific research institute of problems of preservation of nature-historical landscapes of Ukraine.

"Sofievka" has become famous not only all over the world. " the miracle of Uman " is known and in the universe: in 1984 the minor planet 2259, open by the Soviet astronomer Burnashevoj on June, 19, 1971, has received name "Sofievka" in honour of umansky dendrology park.

In 1995 "Sofievka" Europe Nostra took part in the International competition and has received all awards of competition: a medal, the diploma and a board - for work on restoration of park after act of nature of 1980, and also for preservation of monuments of history and culture. The new entrance zone in park with all infra the structures intended for service of the visitor is organized. This zone is connected to the Front entrance from street Garden by road system, and a Front entrance after reconstruction together with an original structure of the House of creativity of scientists NAN of Ukraine that is located above from the Input, is picturesque card of "Sofievka".

It is good "Sofievka" at any time year: and in spring flowering, and in hot years heat, and a mellow autumn, and in winter silence.
