Circuit Breakers

Air Circuit Breakers

Air circuit breakers can be used both as circuit-breakers for general protection (of plants, of user complexes, of electric lines) and as protection circuit breakers of electrical machines (generators, motors, transformers, capacitors).

These can be used both as circuit-breakers for general protection (of plants, of user complexes, of electric lines) and as protection circuit-breakers of electrical machines (generators, motors, transformers, capacitors). They are used in all types of plants (civil, industrial, and in the service sector) as well as in the equipment on-board ships, in mines, in prefabricated substations, and for primary and secondary distribution in general.

Specific characteristics
All the SACE Emax circuit-breakers have the same height and depth both in the fixed and withdrawable version and allow construction of compact switchgear.
They are fitted with many features which mean the personnel can always work under conditions of maximum safety, such as racking-out with the door closed, degree of protection towards the outside up to IP54, an articulated series of safety locks and double insulation.
The innovative structure of the pole guarantees complete insulation between phases and between phase and neutral and ensures full possibility of inspection of the arcing chamber and the main contacts.
SD Pocket is an innovative function which means a PC, even a hand-held one, can dialogue with Emax by means of the Bluetooth protocol. By means of the PC, and without any cables, the following is now possible, for example: the setting of the various protections, display of the measurements including those stored in the Data Logger, to verify the state of the circuit-breaker, know the number of operations carried out, etc..

Conformity with Standards
The SACE Emax circuit-breakers and their accessories are according to the international IEC 947, EN 60947 (harmonised in 28 countries of the CENELEC), CEI EN 60947 and IEC 1000 Standards and conform to the EC Directive:
– “Low Voltage Directives” (LVD) no. 73/23 EEC
– “Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive” (EMC) no. 89/336 EEC.
Furthermore, a series of SACE Emax circuit-breakers conforming to the UL 1066 Standards is available.

High Performance Circuit Breakers

Based on the increasing energy demand the short circuit currents in the low voltage networks are steadily increasing. This creates high demands on performance, safety and switching capacity of minature circuit breakers.

The High Performance Minuture Circuit Breaker fullfill these demands for applications in residentual and industrial applications.

Manual Motor Starters

 Monitoring System

In modern power distribution systems, it is increasingly important to keep the whole installation under control and manage it in the most efficient way. Electronics provide electronic devices which make each circuit-breaker and each protection device in the installation capable of recording and exchanging information which is useful for control and correct management.
ABB SACE provides a complete range of circuit-breakers with high quality electronic releases of great technological level which are universally recognised. Furthermore, measuring instruments for low voltage are also available.
To integrate these devices in a correctly managed installation kept under control, ABB SACE offers the SD2000 system, specially studied for application in all those power distribution plants which require efficient management without the need to use complex and costly systems.
SD2000 is a “ready-to-use” system, consisting of software for personal computers, in standard configuration, which allows complete control of the low voltage electrical installation.
Putting the SACE SD-View 2000 system into service is simple and rapid.
In fact, it is the software itself which guides the user in recognising and configuring the protection units.
The user only requires knowledge of the installation characteristics (such as how many circuit-breakers are installed and how they are connected to each other). No engineering work of the supervision system is necessary, since all the pages displayed are already configured in the system, ready to be used.
Operator use of the software is intuitive and easy to learn: SD2000 has, in fact, graphic pages based on Internet Explorer, and this makes the system as simple to manage as surfing on the Internet.

Moulded Case Circuit Breakers

The moulded-case circuit-breakers, proposed by ABB SACE, derive from two families of apparatus: the well-known and consolidated Isomax S series and the recent but already much awarded Tmax series (Top selection at Intel Design 2003 for their technological content and respect of the environment ). In particular, Tmax are characterised by an extremely high level of performances with limited overall dimensions, installation simplicity and an increasingly greater guarantee of safety for the operator thanks to their reinforced insulation. Tmax circuit-breakers, thanks to their performances, completeness of protection releases and accessories, can be used for all distribution and sub-distribution application for both AC and DC electrical plants.

Specific characteristics of Tmax
The Tmax series is characterised by being a product with a high technological content - the fruit of the most advanced design and simulation tools with excellent performances in minimum overall dimensions.

Thanks to the new technology used for the arcing chambers and the speed of contact opening, the circuit-breakers of the Tmax series guarantee strong limitation of the specific let-through energy and reduction in the peak currents, therefore limiting overheating of the devices and electro-dynamic stresses.

Furthermore, the new Tmax circuit-breakers use a completely common and standardised range of accessories with considerable advantages in terms of reduced stocks as well as flexibility and ease of use. Then within this range there are also the new residual current releases up to 500 A.

Field of application
The moulded-case circuit-breakers are used in industrial and civil low voltage plants with service currents from 1 to 1000 A. They are used in direct and alternating current distribution switchgear, for motor protection (Motor Control Center), generators, capacitors and for end users.

Residual Current Devices

Residual current devices

Residual current operated circuit-breakers are amperometric protection devices which trip when the system leaks a significant current to earth.

They continuously calculate the vector sum of the single-phase or three-phase system line currents and, while the sum is equal to zero, they allow electricity to be supplied; supply is rapidly interrupted if the sum exceeds a value preset according to the sensitivity of the device.

Residual current operated circuit-breakers can be classed according to three parameters:

·       detectable wave form

·       tripping sensitivity and tripping time.

Besides, depending on the type of construction, residual current devices (RCDs) may be classed as RCBOs (magnetothermic with overcurrent protection), RCCBs (without overcurrent protection releaser incorporated) and RCD blocks.

Change-Over Switches

A secured power supply to complex systems is often controlled by logics with mechanical devices for making & breaking, conducting and isolating. On the other hand, the loads may need to be transferred from one supply to another. This is the case when the use of energy is restricted, when the supplying source is overloaded or when maintenance is required.

The solution is change-over or transfer switches

Our solution for these installations are change-over or transfer switches with remote control by motor operator or manual local operation. The range consists of switches, mechanically interlocked to each other, with electrical characteristics that allow an onload switching between the two supplies.

Assured isolation

The isolation of the primary and secondary circuits is assured by the positive contact opening function and the reliable position indication.

How a fuse link limits current

To prevent danger, and damage to equipment and circuits, short circuit currents need to be interrupted extremely quickly. The quick temperature rise generated by the short circuit current causes equipment to breakdown.

Fuse links are designed to react to temperature rise and their current limiting capability is very good. Fuse links contain granulated quartz which binds the temperature generated by the arc in the short circuit. At the same time the pressure rises inside the fuse link and the fusing element ruptures.

Enclosed Switches and Fusegear

Safety switches, switch-disconnectors, switch fuses

The ABB enclosed switches are suitable for power distribution in factories and buildings, as local motor isolators and as main switches. Each incoming supply shall be provided with a hand-operated main switch-disconnector according to the Machine Directive EN 60204 and isolate reliably the electrical equipment from the supply . To meet these requirements the enclosures have handles possible to lock with padlocks in OFF position. The indication of the handle is always reliable, even if the contacts are welded, and the cover cannot be opened in ON position.

Third Harmonic Filters

Third Harmonic Filters - THF

The third harmonic is a growing problem in networks. They are accumulated in the neutral conductor, which means there is a risk of fire.

Third harmonics appear in

·       Fluorescent lighting systems

·       Computers, UPS's, TV monitors

·       Induction ovens, rectifiers

·       Welding equipment

The third harmonic filters eliminates third harmonics in the neutral conductor and in the phase conductors and reduces magnetic fields, power losses and the risk of fire.

Improves power quality and saves on maintenance and repair costs.

Third Harmonic Filters

The Solution - The Third Harmonic Filters THFstar

The third harmonic filters THFstar removes the third harmonic current from the network. The third harmonic currents generated by the single phase loads flowing in the phase conductors sum up in the neutral conductor. The neutral current may be higher than the phase current.

The THF filters mitigates the third harmonic current from the whole network from the luminances to the distribution panel, main switchboard up to the supply transformers medium voltage winding. The mitigation effect is the same both at the line and load side.

The filtering application is patented.

Example on how Third Harmonic Filters THF effects on third harmonic currents.

 Third Harmonic Filter Protective Units

The purpose of the protection unit is to limit the fundamental unbalance current, protect THFstar for overloading and to detect the increased third harmonic current due to network failure or failure of THFstar.

The THF unit THF1_S and current transformer are included in the delivery. The protection unit include 50Hz and 150Hz measurement circuits. The current transformer need to be installed so that all neutral and vagabonding currents pass through it to the star point of the transformer. In case of failure the protection unit is closing the by-pass contactor of the filter.

Third Harmonic Filter Guard Unit

The THF-units for TN-S-system include guard unit (_V). The purpose of guard unit is to supervise the network condition by measuring the level of the current of the PE-conductor
of the group. In case the PE-current exceeding the set level in the area of 4A…10A, the guard unit closes the by-pass contactor of THF and can give an alarm.

If increased protection is needed, the group fuse is bigger than the rated current of the filter, or in case of large cable diameters, the THF-filters can be provided with an extra protection unit and current transformer. In those cases the THFstar is recommended. The protection unit is controlling the by-pass contactor of the THF in case of large 50 Hz current or when the 150Hz current exceeds the set limit. The current transformer is installed in the PE-conductor alt. the PEN-conductor depending on the installation.
